The Christian Buffet

Sometimes it seems as though we treat God's Word as though it is a buffet, and we only pick and choose the parts of it that we like; the parts that give us pleasure.

We load up our plates with the promises of God — the blessings, the favor, the healing, the provision — and we leave behind the parts that challenge us, convict us, or call us to sacrifice. We want the feast without the fast. We want the crown without the cross.

But God's Word is not a buffet. It is a complete meal, designed by a loving Father who knows exactly what we need for our spiritual nourishment and growth. Every verse, every command, every hard truth is there for our benefit — even when it doesn't taste the way we'd like.

The Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 3:16–17 that "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." Notice that Paul says all Scripture — not just the parts that comfort us, but also the parts that correct us.

The next time you sit down at the table of God's Word, don't just reach for what's familiar and comfortable. Let the Holy Spirit serve you what you truly need — and trust that the Chef knows best.
